hobbema meindert Hobbema Meindert, 16381709, Dutch landscape painter. Baptized in Amsterdam on 31 October 1638, the son of Lubbert Meindert, he early assumed the agnomen of Hobbema. In landscape art Hobbema was second only to his coeval Jacob train Ruisdael, with whom he may have studied. Most of his liveness was played out in a poor district of Amsterdam, where he died a pauper.
